Spray Formulation Development for Aerosols
Not every product can be covered by a standard formulation. Spray formulation development at Aerosols Germany starts with your requirement: what task should the spray perform, on which substrate, under which conditions? Development takes place together with our production partners in Europe, who also handle the subsequent filling. The result is a formulation that works as an aerosol, is storage-stable and meets the labelling requirements.
Spray formulation development in four steps
- Requirements profile. We clarify with you the intended use, substrate, desired properties such as drying, adhesion, lubricating effect or cleaning performance as well as specifications for ingredients, for example silicone-free or acetone-free, and pass the profile on to the production partner.
- Development and samples. The partner matches the active ingredient base, solvent, propellant and valve to each other. You receive samples from the production partner for testing in your application and give feedback, which we feed into the next round of samples.
- Testing. Before approval, the spray pattern, pressure, leak tightness, storage stability and compatibility between the product, can and valve are tested at the partner.
- CLP labelling. The finished mixture is classified. This determines the hazard pictograms, signal word, H and P statements for the label as well as the safety data sheet.
Typical development projects
- Spray paint in a special colour shade outside the RAL palette, matched to a corporate colour
- Lubricant spray with adapted viscosity or adhesion for a specific machine
- Cleaner with a specified solvent profile, for example acetone-free for components near plastics
- Variant of a product from the range with a modified classification to meet the customer's storage or transport requirements
Adapting existing formulations
Often an adaptation is sufficient instead of a new development: a different colour shade for paint sprays, a different viscosity for lubricants, a different fragrance for cleaners or a silicone-free variant for welding sprays. The around 150 formulations in our range form the basis for this. This shortens development time and reduces testing effort.
Coordination from a single source
Berger & Schröter does not operate its own laboratory. Our role is coordination: we take on your requirement, agree it with the production partner, organise samples and approval and ensure that changes to the formulation are carried over to the label and safety data sheet. Series filling takes place at the partner that developed the formulation; we handle quality control and dispatch in Iserlohn.
Confidentiality
We treat formulations that you bring with you confidentially and pass them on to the production partner involved only to the extent necessary. Ownership of newly developed formulations and exclusivity for your market are set out in writing before development begins. Describe your requirement to us and we will check whether an adaptation is sufficient or a new development is needed.
Frequently asked questions
How long does formulation development take?
That depends on whether an existing formulation is being adapted or a new development with several rounds of samples at the production partner is required. Adaptations to colour shade, fragrance or viscosity are considerably faster than a new formulation with storage stability testing. Once your requirement has been clarified, we will give you a timeframe.
Who owns the developed formulation?
We agree this in writing before development begins. Arrangements on exclusivity for your market or sales channel are common. Formulations that you bring with you remain your property and are treated confidentially. Without such an agreement, we reserve the right to offer a development to other customers as well.
Do you handle the classification and the safety data sheet?
Yes. The finished mixture is classified under the CLP Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008. Hazard pictograms, signal word, H and P statements for the label as well as the safety data sheet are prepared together with the production partner. You receive both for series approval. For own brands, the safety data sheet is issued in your company details. We carry changes to the formulation over to both documents.
